POPLARVILLE — Pearl River's cross country team added a key signee this week when it landed the signature Janelle Johnson out of Poplarville High School.

Johnson is cross country's first signee of the 2019 class.

Johnson is a dynamic runner who has been competing in cross country and track events since she was in the seventh grade, placing as high as third in the 2016 MHSAA Class 4A Girls State Championship.

Johnson is the daughter of head coach David Johnson.

The elder Johnson was excited to add the PHS standout to his roster and believes she brings a maturity and leadership presence to the team.

"At the high school level, Janelle has excelled and really takes a leadership role on the team," David Johnson said. "When she gets done running she goes back and motivates her teammates."
