Jones Bobcat tennis teams open season with wins at East Central

DECATUR – The Jones College tennis teams both had impressive victories to open the 2019 season here Wednesday afternoon.

The No. 17 Lady Bobcats defeated East Central Community College, 7-2, and the No. 25 Jones men posted an 8-1 decision.

The Bobcat men will meet Oxford-Emory (Georgia) at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Meridian. Both Bobcat teams travel to Holmes for a 2 p.m. match on Feb. 12.

East Central hosts Blue Mountain College on Friday.

No. 17 Lady Bobcats 7, Lady Warriors 2

Jones swept the doubles points.

Mireia Jordan (Spain) and Ariadna Jordan (Spain) defeated Josie Hurst and Ali Grace Walker in No. 1 doubles, 8-5. Kaitlyn Craig (Petal) and Carley Cochran (Wayne County) edged Gabriela Gomez and Kayla Baucum in No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (7-4). Judith Mills (South Pontotoc) and Danielle Viljoen (Jackson) beat Bethany Wellerman and Alex Tindall in No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

Mireia Jordan whipped Gomez in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Ariadna Jordan downed Walker in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Viljoen beat Wellerman in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2 and Mills defeated Baucum in No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Hurst edged Craig in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 and Tindall beat Sarrah Der-Ballout (MSMS) in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

East Central falls to 1-1 on the season.

No. 25 Bobcats 8, Warriors 1

The Bobcats set the tone by winning all of the doubles matches.

Jodi Morey (Spain) and Noel Monsalve (Venezuela) beat Chris Lawrence and Isaac Santitto in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Erich Fischer (Wesson) and Jacob Johnson (North Pike) downed Dylan Barnett and Peyton Chaney in No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Cody Courtney (Florence) and James McWilliams (Northwest Rankin) defeated Isaac Keen and Jacob Wofford in No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

Morey edged Lawrence in No. 1 singles, 7-5, 7-5 and Monsalve whipped Santitto in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Johnson defeated Keen in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1 and Courtney beat Wofford in No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-0. McWilliams beat Dominick Donaldson in No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2. 

Barnett outlasted Fischer in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

In extra matches Daniel Tanious (Laurel) whipped Will Ladner 8-1 and Conner Henderson (Petal) defeated Chaney, 8-2.

The Warriors are now 1-1.
