Pearl River announces inaugural volleyball schedule

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Wildcat fans can mark their calendars, Pearl River's inaugural volleyball schedule has been finalized.

The Wildcats' regular season will run from Aug. 24 until Oct. 29 with the district tournament set for the first week of November. Largely due to the program's independent NJCAA status for the upcoming season, Pearl River's 27-date schedule is comprised of two- and four-year schools from Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana and Texas. All home matches will be played at Shivers Gymnasium, which is currently undergoing facility upgrades to house the new program's courts, locker rooms and coach's office.

"I'm really pleased with the matches we were able to get as a first-year program," Pearl River coach Haley Chatham said. "I'm hopeful this year's schedule is a springboard to more possibilities in the coming seasons."

Chatham's Wildcats were on campus earlier this week for ROAR — PRCC's orientation — and the coach could already tell her new squad is ready to get on the court.

"We're standing on the edge of something that has limitless possibilities," Chatham said. "The girls are ready to get the season started."

The Wildcats report to campus July 8 and begin playing just over a month later with two exhibition matches against Southern Union on Aug. 17 and at William Carey on Aug. 20.

"We're going to jump right onto the court with these established teams in our inaugural season," Chatham said. "They're all quality opponents which will challenge us in our first season."

Pearl River will officially take the court as Mississippi's first JUCO program on Aug. 24 with a home match against Coastal Alabama-Brewton at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will remain home for a 5 p.m. match Aug. 26 against Lawson State before hitting the road for a large chunk of September. PRCC will participate in the Mississippi University for Women's two-day tournament Aug. 30-31 and then visit Coastal Alabama-South on Sept. 3. Pearl River will visit Lawson State on Sept. 12 to play the host and Martin Methodist's junior varsity squad and then head to Huntingdon Sept. 13-14 for their second taste of tournament action.

Chatham's squad returns home for a three-match stretch starting Sept. 17 with a 5 p.m. contest against Bevill State; PRCC then hosts Panola on Sept. 20-21 for two contests that start at 6 and 1 p.m. respectively.

Following a quick road trip to Pensacola State on Sept. 23, Pearl River hosts Coastal Alabama-South at 6 p.m. on Sept. 25.

Pearl River visits Judson College and Pensacola Christian on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 respectively before hosting Pensacola State at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 and Southern Union at 2 p.m. Oct. 11.

Panola will host PRCC on Oct. 14-15 for two matches before Pearl River returns home for its final home match of the 2019 season — a 6 p.m. contest Oct. 17 against Judson College.

The Wildcats will close out the regular season with four straight road contests: At Coastal Alabama-Brewton against the host school and Bevill State on Oct. 19, at Louisiana College on Oct. 23 and at Bevill State on Oct. 29.
