Big bats, big arms lead to MGCCC sweep

Four Mississippi Gulf Coast batters had home runs in the first game Wednesday, and four Bulldog pitchers combined for a one-hitter in the second of a sweep of Nunez at Chalmette, La.

Gulf Coast won 12-2 in five innings and 9-2 in seven.

"In every phase of the game, we played pretty well," Bulldogs coach Rodney Batts said. "We pitched well. The two starting pitchers threw really good for us. We were able to get some more guys in there who hadn't thrown for a while once we got a lead."

Ike Williams (So., St. Martin/St. Martin), Cullan O'Shea (So., Mary G. Montgomery/Mobile Ala.), Dee Hawthorne (Fr., Harrison Central/Gulfport) and Brandon Parker (So., West Harrison/Saucier) had round-trippers in the opener. Six Bulldogs had two hits, with Fisher Ray (So., George County/Bruce) getting two doubles. Hawthorne and O'Shea had three RBI.

Ian Landreneau (Fr., John Curtis/River Ridge La.) struck out five and allowed four hits to get his first collegiate win.

In the second game, Dawson Hall (Fr., East Central/Hurley) struck out nine without allowing a hit in four innings. He's 3-0 and now has 31 strikeouts in 23 innings.

Darby Gilbert (Fr., Pascagoula/Pascagoula), Ryan Blackburn (So., Oak Grove/Oak Grove) and Nicholas Hertz (So., St. Stanislaus/Long Beach) each pitched an inning in relief, striking out four more.

Williams had his second home run of the day in the second game, and Alden Davis (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had one, too. Davis, Tanner Estill (So., Petal/Petal) and Castor Lee (So., Gulfport/Gulfport) had three hits.

"Offensively, I thought we swung the bats really well all day," Batts said. "We had some big hits, some clutch hitting. I feel pretty good getting some momentum going into conference play."

The Bulldogs (8-4) will enter the MACJC portion of their schedule having won seven straight. They travel to Clarksdale for Saturday's doubleheader against Coahoma starting at noon.

Nunez, in its second season of play, is 7-17. The Bulldogs have won all six meetings against the Pelicans.
