PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast swept the first week of MACJC Player of the Week awards, with pitcher Antoine Harris and catcher/designated hitter Tucker Thomas winning Tuesday.
Harris, a freshman right-hander from Chalmette, didn't allow a hit in five innings as the first of three Bulldog pitchers to combine for a no-hitter in a 5-0 win at Nunez. Playing on his former high school field, he struck out nine.
Thomas, a sophomore from Biloxi who played catcher, designated hitter and center field, caught a no-hitter and hit two home runs while batting .444 during a 2-2 week for the team. He slugged a pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth inning of a 13-9 loss at Nunez, then had a triple in a 5-0 win in the nightcap which saw him backstop the no-no. He had a double in a 13-10 loss to Baton Rouge, and extended his hit streak to four with a three-run homer in an 8-5 win in Game 2.
Both players are now eligible for NJCAA weekly awards, which will be announced Wednesday.
Gulf Coast returns to action Friday at Decatur, where the Bulldogs will play East Mississippi at noon and Bossier Parish at 2:30.
