Mississippi Gulf Coast picked right up where the Bulldogs left off last season, winning the first event of the fall by 11 shots. They shot 14-over par at the NJCAA District D Tournament Preview on Monday to top the seven-team field.
Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison) led four Bulldogs in the top-nine by shooting even-par and finishing second. He was one shot back of medalist Ethan Dyess from Meridian.
"He was double-bogeyed his 15th hole, but otherwise was rock solid," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "He missed a couple of birdie putts, but he didn't miss too many shots today. He played well."
Gulf Coast finished ahead of Northeast Mississippi, and then there were five teams within seven shots of each other starting another 17 shots back.
Gulf Coast's Peyton Norwood (So, Jackson Prep/Madison) tied for fifth at 4-over. Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) and Hayden Green (So, D'Iberville/Biloxi) were tied for seventh another shot back.
"We played well for our first event," Snell said. "We did give some shots away. Matt Wilkinson made triple-bogey on a hole, but those are typical freshman mistakes. Otherwise, we played pretty consistent and pretty steady."
