JC Bobcats drop overtime decision to Warriors

DECATUR – East Central Community College scored the final six points of regulation to tie the game and never trailed in overtime as they defeated Jones College, 84-81, here Monday night at the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building.
Jones falls to 15-5 overall, 9-2 in the MACJC South Division and saw its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Jones appeared to be in good shape in regulation when Galen Alexander (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) made two free throws with 24.9 seconds left to make it 70-64. Dontavious Smith hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 70-67.
The Bobcats missed a pair of free throws with 7.2 seconds to play. Jones fouled ECCC's Nick Preyer with 2.4 seconds remaining before he could attempt a 3-point shot.
He made the first shot and missed the second. There was a scramble for the rebound and a jump ball was called with .5 second showing.
The possession arrow was in favor of East Central and they got ball possession under their offensive goal. The inbounds pass was deflected and caught by Marcus Bates, who put the ball in the basket.
After a pause of a few seconds, the officials ruled the shot good, forcing overtime at 70-70.
Roti Ware hit back-to-back shots to start overtime and the Warriors would never trail.
ECCC was up 81-75 when Alexander hit a long 3-pointer to make it 81-78 with 10 seconds remaining. Ware's two free throws made it 83-78 with 8.7 seconds showing.
Michael Williams Jr. (Rayville, Louisiana) then made a 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds to play to make it 83-81.
Ware was fouled with 2.2 seconds to play and made one free throw.
Alexander's shot from just beyond midcourt was no good and the Warriors claimed the win.
East Central took control of the game late in the first half.
The Warriors led 25-24 with 6:30 to play in the half after a David Gaines Jr. (Wayne County) basket. ECCC then went on a 15-2 run and took a 40-26 lead with 1:05 left in the half when Preyer made a 3-pointer. David McCoy's (Meridian) basket made it 40-28 at halftime.
Jones came out strong defensively in the second half.
Zachariah Malone's (Shady Grove, Louisiana) dunk with 7:08 left ended a 26-11 run and put Jones up, 54-51. 
The Bobcats continued the pressure and took its longest lead of the game at 67-57 with 2:00 to play when Williams made a free throw.
But ECCC would outscore Jones 13-3 down the stretch, force the extra session and pull out the win.
Alexander had 29 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats. Williams had 14 points and five assists and Kenneth Rogers (Starkville) had 13 points. 
Ware had 27 points for the Warriors. Preyer added 13, Marcus Bates and Smith had 11 each and Zack Tucker had 10.
Jones was 28-of-59 from the field (10-of-32 from 3-point range) for 48 percent. Jones was 15-of-21 from the free throw line.
East Central was 29-of-55 from the floor (6-of-12 from 3-point range) for 53 percent. The Warriors were 20-of-25 from the free throw line.
ECCC outrebounded Jones, 32-25.
The Warriors are 10-10 overall, 3-8 in the division.
Jones will host Southwest at A.B. Howard Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The game will air on www.jcjc.tv.
East Central goes to Meridian on Thursday.
