UTICA – The Hinds Bulldogs took the lead for good late in the first half and went on to defeat Jones College 89-75 here Thursday night at J.D. Boyd Gymnasium.
It was the first loss of the season for the Bobcats, 9-1 and 1-1 in the MACJC South Division. The win snapped a 12-game losing streak for Hinds vs. Jones. It was the Bulldogs' first win over Jones since 2014.
Trailing 28-18, Jones went on an 11-0 run and took its final lead of the game at 29-28 when Casey Smith Jr. (Columbus) hit a 3-pointer with 5:18 left to make it 29-28. But Hinds closed the half on a 17-5 run to take a 45-34 lead at intermission.
The Bobcats fell behind 56-42 early in the second half, but pulled within 70-64 with 7:45 left on a Ladarius Anderson (Jackson Provine) 3-pointer. But Hinds would come back and take its longest lead of the game at 86-69 with 3:12 to play when Stephon Thomas made a jump shot.
SharDarrion Allen (Raymond) had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead Jones – his fifth straight 'double-double' of the season. Anderson had 10 points and Tradavis Thompson (Raymond) had nine. Kenneth Rogers (Starkville) had eight rebounds and Zachariah Malone (Shady Grove, Louisiana) finished with seven. Thompson had six assists and Smith had five.
Ladarius Marshall had 17 points and seven rebounds for Hinds, 7-2 and 2-0 in the division. Dontrell McQuarter had 16 points – all in the first half.
The Bobcats were 28-of-74 from the field for 38 percent, while Hinds was 28-of-58 for 48 percent. Jones was only 14-of-27 from the free throw line for 52 percent and Hinds was 27-of-36 for 75 percent.
Hinds outrebounded Jones, 45-44, while the Bobcats had 13 turnovers and Hinds had 18.
