No. 2 seed Lady Bobcats open vs. No. 15 seed Catamounts Wednesday innational tournament

ELLISVILLE – The MACJC and Region 23 champion Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats know who they will play to open the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

JCJC, seeded No. 2, meets No. 15 seed Potomac St. (West Virginia) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Traceway Park in Clinton.

If the Lady Bobcats win that game, then they will meet the winner of the Illinois Central/Johnson County (Kansas) game at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. A loss means they would meet the Johnson County/ICC loser at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Lady Bobcats enter the game at 49-3, riding a 16-game winning streak. Potomac St. is 23-9-1 and is the Region 20 champion.

Des Moines Area Community College (Iowa) is the top seed in the tournament. DMACC is 44-0 on the season and meets No. 16 Mott (Michigan) at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This will be JCJC's sixth appearance in the national tournament.

JCJC is led on offense by third baseman Emily Robinson (Lafayette), who leads the team in batting average at .417. She has nine home runs and 60 RBIs. Shortstop Taylor Murray (Parklane Academy) is batting .320 and leads the team with 10 home runs and 62 RBIs. Second baseman Callie Venable (Clinton, Louisiana) is batting .393 with four home runs and 40 RBIs.

First baseman McKennah Sikes (Van Buren, Arkansas) is batting .392 with five home runs and 30 RBIs. Centerfield Kelsha Loftin (Mendenhall) is batting .381 with two home runs and 29 RBIs. She has 62 stolen bases, which leads the MACJC and is third nationally. Rightfielder Gracie McCleskey (Caledonia) bats .372 with five home runs and 26 RBIs.

Designated player Hallie Donald (Mooreville) is batting .340 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs.

Leftfielders Simone McKinney (Harrison Central) and Sarah Brock (North Pike) split time. McKinney is batting .415, while Brock bats .361.

Faith Denton (Northwest Rankin) and Bailey Gilbert (Sylva-Bay Academy) share catching duties. Denton is batting .333 with a home run and 15 RBIs. Gilbert bats .240 with two home runs and 13 RBIs.

JCJC owns a .354 team batting average. They have a .553 slugging percentage, which is 17thin the nation.

In the circle, Karli Perque (Westwego, Louisiana) owns a 21-2 record. The Memphis signee has a 0.91 earned run average, which is fourth in the nation. Perque has pitched 131 innings, allowed 17 runs, 86 hits, walked 43 and struck out 162, which is 10thin the nation.

Madison Burge (Harrison Central) is 15-1 with a 2.10 ERA. She has pitched 96.2 innings, allowed 21 earned runs, 89 hits, walked 21 and struck out 44.

Donald is 12-0. She owns a 0.77 ERA, which is first in the MACJC and third in the nation. In 82 innings, she has allowed nine earned runs, 48 hits, walked 11 and struck out 61.

JCJC has a 1.20 team ERA, which is second only to top-seed DMACC, which has a 1.04 ERA. The Lady Bobcats have 277 strikeouts, which is ninth in the nation. DMACC leads the nation with 412 strikeouts.

Other first round matchups on Wednesday will be No. LSU-Eunice vs. No. 14 Mercer County (New Jersey), No. 4 Phoenix (Arizona) vs. No. 13 Pitt (North Carolina), No. 5 Kirkwood (Iowa) vs. No. 12 Kankakee (Illinois), No. 6 Cowley (Kansas) vs. No. 11 Madison (Wisconsin) and No. 8 Lansing (Michigan) vs. No. 9 Lincoln Land (Illinois).

The tournament concludes Saturday.
