PERKINSTON — No. 13 Mississippi Gulf Coast breezed to another two wins in its season-opening weekend Sunday, blasting Dyersburg State 10-0 and 10-2, both in five innings.

It finished up a four-game sweep of the Eagles at Ross-Smith Field.

"It's a better start to the season than you could really imagine," Gulf Coast coach Eric Neel said. "We swung the bat extremely well. We ran the bases extremely well. And we might have pitched better than that when it's all said and done. The defense was pretty good, too. You would like to be able to pick out some flaws, but I can't right now. Hopefully, they'll come back Tuesday morning hungry."

Andrea Morgan (Fr, Jackson Prep/Jackson) threw a two-hit shutout in the first game, and the Bulldogs took advantage of seven walks with timely hitting and aggressive baserunning.

Morgan struck out six in her five innings of work.

"She was excellent," Neel said. "We told her before the game, she could be the next one that's as good as our current No. 1. She's got electric stuff. Hopefully, she'll build off of that and keep getting better and better."

Gulf Coast did more damage with their bats in the second game, particularly Briana Shores (So, Richland/Richland), who went 2-for-3 with four RBI. She had a three-run homer in the fourth.

"It's confidence, and I feel like I've gotten a lot stronger, too," Shores said. "We've been in the weight room, and hitting a lot harder."

Jenn Perkins (So, Barbe/Lake Charles, La.) hit a solo shot to lead off that inning. Alexis Laughlin (Fr, East Central/Hurley) went 3-for-3 with a triple, and Kayla Cade (So, Harrison Central/Saucier) had a double. Marsha' Hunt (So, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) drove in two runs.

Gulf Coast is scheduled to play against Sinclair on Saturday, but wet weather predicted for the week may force a change in plans. First pitch is supposed to be at 1 p.m.
