Lady Bears go 1-1 in opening day softball action

The Lady Bears opened the 2020 softball season with one win and one loss Friday in Orange Beach, AL, in the Sun Chief Classic as they defeated Southern Union 5-2 before falling to Coastal Alabama South 9-8.
 
A two-RBI double from Ryleigh McManus and a run-scoring Jenna Brock single helped the Lady Bears take a 4-0, 2nd-inning lead over Southern Union; Brock also had a second single in the game.
 
The score went to 5-0 in the 3rd inning on a RBI two-base hit by Jade Latham.
 
Southern Union picked up a run in their half of the 4th inning and added the final run of the game in the 5th.
 
Latham picked up the win in the circle, allowing a pair of runs on six hits and a walk while striking out nine batters. Lana Moak had a double and single in the game while Mikenzi Authement singled twice.
 
The Lady Bears (1-1) trailed Coastal Alabama South 8-4 after three innings, getting two-RBI singles from Tyranesha Davis and Madison Newman.
 
Three Coastal errors led to a pair of runs for the Lady Bears in the 4th inning to make the score 8-6. The Lady Bears then tied the game at 8-8 in the 5th on an RBI double by McManus, her second hit of the game, and a Latham single.
 
A two-out base hit in the top of the 6th inning provided the winning run for Coastal.
 
Authement took the loss in the circle for the Lady Bears, giving up a run on six hits and a walk in four innings. She struck out one batter.
 
Moak, Newman and Scottie Metrejean each had two singles in the game for the Lady Bears.
 
The Lady Bears finish their stay in the Classic Saturday with a 3:45 matchup against Bishop State and take on Coastal Alabama East at 6:00.
