Travis goes yard twice in another sweep

No. 8 Mississippi Gulf Coast shook off some rust Sunday and swept another opponent, going to Marion Military and beating the Tigers 5-2 and 6-3.

"We played pretty good for having not played in a week," Bulldogs coach Eric Neel said. "We were not crisp, for sure, but we played hard and pitched well. WE played pretty good defense and had 18 hits, I think. It's a good day."

Rakeya Travis (Fr, Poplarville/Poplarville) hit two more home runs, one in each game, to give her four on the season. Jenn Perkins (So, Barbe/Lake Charles, La.) went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the second game.

Kristen Cade (So, Harrison Central/Saucier) struck out 10 in a complete-game seven-hit effort in the first game. Andrea Morgan (Fr, Jackson Prep/Jackson) went the distance in the second, striking out five.

"Rakeya had another good day, and Drea threw extremely well again," Neel said. "We should have made a couple plays there at the end, and she would have won 6-1."

Alexis Laughlin (Fr, East Central/Hurley), Briana Shores (So, Richland/Richland) and Caroline Moore (Fr, Maryville/Maryville, Tenn.) had two hit in the first game. Marsha' Hunt (So, Philadelphia/Philadelphia) had two hits and double in the second.

Gulf Coast (6-0) will travel to Meridian next weekend and play in the Rush Invitational. The Bulldogs play twice Friday and three times Saturday.
