No. 4 Jones softball goes 4-1 in Gulf Shores tourney

GULF SHORES, Alabama – The No. 4 Jones College Bobcats posted a 4-1 mark during games on Feb. 14-15 here in the Sun Chief Classic.

 

After playing their first 10 games on the road, the Bobcats, 8-2, will play their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Community Bank Park. Jones meets Coastal Alabama-South at 1 p.m. and Northwest at 5 p.m. Northwest faces Coastal Alabama-South at 3 p.m.

February 14 games

 

The Bobcats made quick work of three opponents on the opening day of the Coastal Alabama Sun Chief Classic, run-ruling Southern Union State, No. 6 Illinois Central and No. 9 Wallace-Dothan by a combined 33-3 margin..

Jones 9, Southern Union State 1 (5 inn.)
Tyesha Cole and Kristian  Edwards combined to go 4-for-7 with two RBIs and five stolen bases as Jones knocked off SUS to kickoff the day.

The Bobcats struck for four runs in the opening frame and led 9-0 after three innings.

Lauren Stringer tossed a two-hit shutout over four innings, striking out five against no walks.  Carlee Nations threw the final inning to close out the win.

Jones 12, Illinois Central 1 (5 inn.)
McKenna Polk went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and tossed a three-hit shutout in the circle in a second run-rule win.

Aubrielle Hunt's RBI-single gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead after an inning of play before the Bobcats scored the final dozen.

Jones batted around in the second, plating four runs on six hits, and scored three more in the third to lead 7-1 after three.

Edwards, LP Trammell, Maycee Knight, Raylen Blackwell and Kat Wallace all had multiple hits as JC out-hit ICC 14-3.

Jones 12, Wallace-Dothan 1 (5 inn.)
Sterling James  the circle and eight different Bobcats picked up a hit in the victory.

Lauren Pope was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and had two of JC's seven doubles as the Bobcats knocked off their third NJCAA Top 20 program of the season.

Jones busted the game open with a six-run fourth, using RBI-hits from Cole, Kayla Collins, Trammell, Meagan Wynne and Nations.

 

February 15 games

Jones closed the weekend tournament 4-1 with a pair of NJCAA Top 10 wins.


Wallace State-Hanceville 6, Jones 2 

The Lady Vols rallied for four runs in the third inning on a solo home run from Callie Ryan and two-run single from Andrea Harbin and never looked back. 

Jones led 2-0 in the first after RBI-singles from Collins and Knight, but was held to just two hits the final six innings.

Wallace State extended the lead to 6-2 in the sixth on Ty Wilson's RBI-groundout and Addie Robinson's triple.

Polk went the distance in the circle, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Josie Thompson picked up the win for the Lady Vols despite six walks. 

Jones 3, John A. Logan 2 (8 inn.)

Collins' walk-off single up the middle in the eighth scored Mycah Hall from second and capped off a big day for the sophomore at the plate.

Tied 1-1 in the sixth, the Lady Vols took the lead on a passed ball in the top half before Pope's  RBI -double tied it again at 2-2 to eventually force extra innings.

Polk, who tossed 4.2 innings in relief to earn the win, worked out of two big jams in both the seventh and eighth. The Lady Vols had the potential winning run at third with one out, twice, before getting two groundouts and two strikeouts. 

James tossed three scoreless frames to start the game with three strikeouts and no walks.
