Pearl River drops doubleheader to Northwest FloridaState

NICEVILLE, Fla. — The Pearl River Community College softball team could not get much goingTuesday night when it dropped its doubleheader against Northwest Florida State 9-0 and 5-2.

"The first game wasn't our best," Pearl River coach Christie Meeks said. "There were a couple opportunities where we could have scored but we didn't. I thought we played better as the game went on though and we played better defensively."

GAME 1: Northwest Florida State 9, Pearl River 0 (5 inn.)

The Wildcats (4-6 overall) were not able to get much going throughout the first contest against Northwest Florida (12-6).

Northwest Florida took the lead early with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Grace Stringer (Moselle; South Jones) got the start for the Wildcats going 2 1/3 innings and striking out two.

Danielle Lalonde (Cecilia, La.) pitched in relief, going 1 2/3 innings and striking out one while allowing just one earned run.

GAME 2: Northwest Florida State 5, Pearl River 2

Northwest Florida got the scoring started again in the bottom of the third inning when it scored two runs on a double to take a 2-0 lead.

They added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game.

The Wildcats struck back in the top of the fifth inning when Brooke Fagan (Kiln; Hancock) hit a RBI double that scored two runs to make it a 4-2 game.

However, Northwest padded its lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on to win the game.
