No. 4 Bobcats belt seven home runs in sweep of Sun Chiefs

ELLISVILLE – The 4th-ranked Jones College Bobcats used the long ball to sweep a doubleheader here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park/Gwen Magee Field.


The Bobcats belted a pair of home runs in a 6-1 win over Coastal Alabama-South in game one. Jones then ripped five solo home runs in game two as they won, 7-1.


Jones (15-3) was scheduled to play at Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) on Thursday, but that doubleheader has been postponed. The next scheduled games for Jones will be at 3/5 p.m. on March 18 at Copiah-Lincoln.


Coastal Alabama-South (14-6) hosts Carl Sandburg College (Illinois) on Thursday.

The Sun Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Caitlin McRee home run.


Jones tied it in the fifth when Maycee Knight (Enterprise-Clarke) led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by McKenna Polk (Central Holmes Academy). With two outs, pinch-hitter Raylen Blackwell (St. Patrick) singled Knight home.


The Bobcats then put up five runs – all with two outs – in the sixth inning.


Kayla Collins (East Central) singled with one out and stole second. With two outs, LP Trammell (Germantown) homered to center to give Jones a 3-1 lead. Knight drew a walk and Polk followed with an RBI double to left. Meagan Wynne (Richland) then smashed a two-run home run to end the scoring.


Lauren Stringer (Taylorsville) went the distance and got the win, improving to 5-0. She allowed one run, five hits, walked none and struck out eight.


Trammell and Wynne homered for Jones with Lauren Pope (Pearl) and Polk adding doubles. Tyesha Cole (Philadelphia), Collins, Blackwell and Knight added singles.


Kennedy Carruth went all six innings and got the loss. She allowed six runs, eight hits, walked one and struck out six.


McRee homered with Kelsey Hodges getting a double. Hannah Lollar, Carruth and Alayna Adams added singles.

Kristian Edwards (Laurel) led off the bottom of the first with a home run, but Dionne Templet answered with a solo shot in the top of the second to tie it at 1-1.


Edwards then drilled her second shot of the day to start the third inning. Cole followed with a double and Collins drew a walk. With two outs, Knight drew a walk to load the bases and Hailey Weems (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) followed with a two-run single to left to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.


Cole blasted a home run in the fourth to make it 5-1 and Trammell and Weems had roundtrippers in the fifth to end the scoring.


Sterling James (DeSoto Central) pitched the final 4.0 innings and was credited with the win. She allowed no runs, three hits, walked none and struck out five to improve to 5-0. Polk started, went the first 3.0 innings, allowed one run, two hits, walked two and struck out two.


Edwards homered twice for Jones with Cole getting a home run and a double. Trammell and Weems each homered and single. Pope added a single. Weems had three RBIs.


Starter Tyler Lawson pitched two-plus innings, allowed three runs and took the loss. McRee pitched 2.0 innings, Sydney Clements pitched .2 innings and Tori Herrington tossed 1.1 innings for the Sun Chiefs.


Templet homered and singled with Madalyn Ingram, McRee and Grace Graves adding singles.
