MS Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs stifle Meridian

Mississippi Gulf Coast put the handcuffs on another team Monday night, leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 63-35 victory at Meridian.

It was the second-straight game they'd held an opponent to 40 or few points.

"That 1-3-1 with the bigs, the girls can cover a lot of area," Gulf Coast coach Hope Adams said. "We found something that fits our team."

Amber Sutton (Fr., Jackson/Madison Central) and Shelli Thigpen (So., Wylie, Texas/Wylie) had 12 points each for Gulf Coast. Kayla Simmons had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Gulf Coast (11-7, 7-4 MACJC South) remains in a second-place tie in the division with Copiah-Lincoln and Pearl River, both winners Monday. That pack of three is one game in front of East Central, which upset No. 5 Jones in Decatur.

The top four teams in the division qualify for the state tournament. The Lady Bulldogs haven't made it to the postseason since 2013.

Gulf Coast led by five after 10 minutes, and the Lady Bulldogs were up 27-16 at the half.

"We started off a little slow," Adams said. "We start off slow on the road, but we finally picked it up in the second half and started making some shots. Our inside game was very effective tonight."

Gulf Coast outscored Meridian (9-11, 3-8) 25-10 in the fourth quarter.

Breannah McCullah (So., Edwards/Raymond) didn't score a point Monday night, but made her presence known in the game. She had five assists, nine rebounds and five blocks.

The Lady Bulldogs travel to archrival Pearl River on Thursday for a huge South showdown. Tipoff in Poplarville will be at 5:30 p.m.

"We're just trying to stay focused on the next game," Adams said. "You never know what will happen. East Central beat Jones tonight, so I'm telling our girls we have to keep the momentum going."
