Pearl River CC Lady Wildcats prepare for new season with same winning expectations

POPLARVILLE — Preparation for the 2018 season officially got underway this week as Pearl River Community College's women's soccer team broke for fall camp. With their first match only two weeks away, the Lady Wildcats are hoping to continue a winning tradition that's been nearly two decades strong.

Coming off of an undefeated regular season a year ago, this year's squad presents a new challenge for head coach Jack Byrd and his team which features a very young roster.

"It's exciting. We have a lot of new faces with 17 freshmen, which is the biggest freshmen class we've ever had. They've come in eager and ready," said Byrd, who is going into his 10th season as head coach. "As expected there was some confusion and miscommunication here and there but at the end of the day they worked hard and they gave effort and that's all we're looking for at this juncture."

While there is plenty of youth on the Lady Wildcats' roster, the returning sophomores are making sure that the ultimate goal for this year's team is very clear.

"We actually set goals the first night," said midfielder Raine Frazier, of Olive Branch. "Some goals ranged from just coming out of their shell. Others have been to get better at certain things, but as a team our goal is to win state."

Before the regular season kicks off, PRCC will host alumni games for both teams. The games will be played Friday, Aug. 17, with the women playing at 6 p.m. and the men kicking off at 7:30 p.m. There will be a $25 fee to play, with the proceeds going to help fund the continued facility improvements.

The Lady Wildcats will begin their season Aug. 22 when they host Itawamba Community College at 2 p.m. The next night, Aug. 23, all of PRCC's fall teams will be introduced during Meet The Wildcats, which will be held at Dobie Holden Stadium.
